Trump Welcomes Bolsonaro's Son to Oval Office

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Tuesday lavished praise on Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro following a prominent Oval Office meeting, publicly hailing the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as a figure of patriotic promise.

"It was very nice having Flavio Bolsonaro in the Oval Office," Trump wrote about the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on his social media platform Truth Social, adding that he was "a smart young man who loves his country."

Flavio Bolsonaro, for his part, used the high-profile encounter to make a direct economic appeal to the American president. Writing on US social media company X, he disclosed that he "expressly asked President Trump not to tax our companies," contending that tariffs are not the solution. He also took the opportunity to take a swipe at Brazilian President Lula da Silva's handling of trade negotiations with Washington.

The meeting carries significant political weight. Flavio Bolsonaro announced his candidacy for the 2026 Brazilian presidential election in December, positioning himself as a torchbearer for his father's right-wing movement.

The elder Bolsonaro and Trump forged a close ideological alliance during overlapping tenures in power, bonded by shared right-wing politics. That bond has endured beyond their respective time in office — following Bolsonaro's criminal conviction in Brazil, Trump mounted a public defense of his ally, denouncing the trial as unjust and raising the prospect of punitive tariffs or sanctions in response.
